Christian Sascau (35), of no fixed address, was sentenced to three years in prison at Blackfriars Crown Court on February 7.

Central Line stations were targeted along with lines in Epping, Enfield, Barnet and Whetstone in a three-month spree from February to May last year.

Sascau was arrested after British Transport Police officers found more than a tonne of cable sheathing in the loft of an address in Newham.

He was found guilty of ten counts of conspiracy to steal cable from the London Underground and failing to appear at court.

Speaking after the sentencing, investigating officer Pc Adrienne Curzon said cable theft can have a “huge impact” on rail services and incoveniences thousands of passengers.

She added: “Stealing railway cable is incredibly dangerous. Thieves risk not only a prison sentence but also serious injury and death through electrocution.”

Anyone with information about cable theft or who sees people acting suspiciously around the railway is asked to contact BTP on 0800 40 50 40.
