The Recorder can confirm that The Chequers Pub, Barkingside, is officially closed while its leaseholder searches for a new manager to take the reins.

As reported last month, residents were fearful the pub had closed amid reports its doors had been shut for more than a week.

Black shutters have now been installed on the pub’s windows.

A spokeswoman from Star Pubs and Bars, which owns the pub’s lease, today (October, 18) confirmed it hopes to open the pub “as soon as possible”.

She said: “Unfortunately it remains closed at the current time until we are able to appoint a new operator to run this great community pub.

“Anyone interesting in taking it on can find more details on our website www.starpubs.co.uk.”

The pub was previously managed by Matthew Todd, the former director of Opus Bars.

When approached for comment last month, Mr Todd told the Recorder that he left the business in July this year and that he has no information about the recent closure.

Residents group Barkinside21 held a regular meeting at the pub but has had to move venue.

Ravi Panesar, 37, had been running the Sing Song club at the pub every two months for the past two years.

“It just failed to take off,” Ravi he said, at the time.

“It is just a shame because there was a real local community.

“It’s a real loss to everyone.”
