A charity which supports adults with physical and learning disabilities will benefit from the funds raised by the Mayor’s Annual Family Fun Run on April 2.

Vibrance offers a range of services for its users with the aim of supporting them to live an independent life in their own community.

It manages 14 care homes in London and Essex. The home in Green Lane, Goodmayes, provides a calm environment for adults with autism.

Paul Allen, Vibrance chief executive, explained how the charity designed the home to ensure it was a welcome environment that wouldn’t upset its users.

“It’s a specialist service for adults with autism,” said Paul. “One of the common features is that changes in routine are very difficult.

“The house in Green Lane has been decorated in a subdued way using subtle colours and we have converted one of the rooms into a relaxation room.”

Sensory and relaxation services are vital for people with autism as many struggle to cope without routine and can be overwhelmed by change, which is why Vibrance wants to raise money for a spa pool.

Paul said: “The team there are certain people would really enjoy it and it would be a great way for them to relax.”

The fun run around Ilford town centre is the first for many years and proceeds will be split between Mayor of Redbridge Cllr Gurdial Bhamra’s three chosen charities.

On the day of the fun run each of the mayor’s charities will have a stall to provide people with information about the work they do, and Paul said he was delighted to be selected as one of the three.

“We are the main provider of learning disability services in the borough so it was a really important recognition. It was a really special local acknowledgement.”

Hundreds of people are expected to take part in the run.
