A walking group in east London is putting on free self-defence classes for women who are "worried about going out, especially at night".
Walk It Out is a project aimed at empowering women and young girls in Redbridge and the surrounding areas, founded by Chadwell Heath resident April Mehmet.
The classes will take place at the Tesco Community Space in Goodmayes on January 14, February 25 and March 18 from 11am to 12.30pm.

April said: "My goal is to build confidence and self-esteem in women and what I always hear from local women is they're worried about going out, especially at night.
"[Walk It Out is] all about teaching women to be aware of their surroundings and to be assertive and that's where self-defence comes in as well."

She continued: "In the self-defence classes, women are taught to be aware of their surroundings.
"If men approach them from the front, from behind or if they feel threatened in any way, [they are taught] what to do physically and how to stand and prevent them from being a victim.
"It's very beneficial. Self-defence should be in the school curriculum. Everybody should know a little bit of self-defence."
Schools of Kung Fu Essex will lead the classes, which are open to those aged 16 and over.
April said: "I myself have just learnt a simple move and I would never have known that if I didn't go to self-defence classes so I really recommend going and the feedback that has come back has been very positive."
She added: "Our instructor is male so I've said to the women, 'at the end of the day, there are men out there, so we have to get used to being around men'".
Up to 20 participants can join each class and you can book your place by contacting Walk It Out at 07437517177 or contactwalkitout@gmail.com.
