A Hainault post office has been halved in size to make it “financially viable”.
Manford Way Post Office, Manford Way, had its official opening on Friday after closing at the start of September.
The new-look branch has three counters and facilities for customers with hearing difficulties.
Subpostmaster Yunus Patel said a large post office was not necessary or sustainable.
He added: “This has been a big transformation, but people are very pleased with the results.
“There was too much space before and it was cold and damp.”
Extended opening times on Saturdays mean it will now be open until 5.30pm six days a week.
Ilford North MP Lee Scott cut the ribbon at the official opening, joined by staff, residents and councillors.
He said: “I am delighted to be opening this newly refurbished post office as it plays a vital role in community life.”
A Post Office spokesman said Manford Way Post Office was too large to be “financially viable” without being part-filled with a shop.
The company is franchising many crown branches, including Barkingside Post Office in High Street, which is due to be moved into a shop by April.
The Communication Workers’ Union has staged 12 rounds of strike action in just five months over the plans and ongoing disputes about jobs and pay.
