The man, understood to be in his 20s, is believed to have been hit with a bottle in the incident in Stratford Broadway at shortly before 4am.

Scotland Yard said police officers were called to the Broadway at 3.55am. The fight, possibly involving around a dozen people, is understood to have happened near a nightclub.

Three people were arrested by police at the scene and their inquiries continue. Part of the Broadway will remain closed while police forensic officers examine the scene.

* A road accident in nearby Biggerstaff Road and a burst watermain in West Ham Lane contributed to traffic delays in the area this morning.
