The Sophia Hub is based at St John the Evangelist church in St Johns Road, Seven Kings.

Reverend Jonathan Evens said it aimed to use the expertise and experience available in faith groups across the borough to help local people.

Speaking at the area seven committee meeting on Tuesday, he said: “All the people involved have experience from employment and my own background is as a civil servant.

“There are so many people with expertise in the community that can help people in this difficult economic climate.”

The initiative aims to spread from Seven Kings into Ilford and beyond using faith networks and community facilities.

Cllr Elaine Norman said: “I think this project is wonderful, it’s exactly what we’re meant to be on about with the big society.”

Cllr Ross Hatfull added: “We’ve given £2,500 for Christmas lights and in the long term this will do a lot more for the community.”

The committee granted £2,500 towards the project and contributions are also being requested from other organisations.

Donations have been sent from Mission in London’s Economy and Mr Evens hopes to receive more support from faith groups and fundraising.
