No birthday is completed without a cake, disco and balloons and a shopping centre in Ilford was not to be left out.

The Exchange Ilford celebrated their 21st birthday with a retro rollerdisco and unveiled their new mascot – a six foot heart.

Old and young tried out their roller-skating skills on Sunday with instructors standing nearby in case anyone needed a helping hand.

Marc Myers, manager of the centre in High Road, Ilford, said: “The Exchange has become a firm focus for both shoppers and the community.”

The mascot was designed by pupil Monika Szulc of Cleveland Junior School, Cleveland Road, Ilford.

Mr Myers said: “We are proud to be at the heart of Ilford which is why we felt Monika’s character such an appropriate mascot.”

Monika was presented with £100 and a donation was made to her school.
