Zina Mir, who owns knitted goods manufacturers Handmade by Zina, launched the challenge from her stall at the Redbridge Green Fair last month.

People who were shopping for Zina’s knitted sweatshirts and headbands contributed in making the large quilt to be auctioned for the African school.

Many of those picking up the needles were doing so for the first time so they got to pick up a skill as well as help those in need.

“It was very good,” Zina said. “A lot of people were very interested in learning how to crochet and we tried to knit a whole blanket in a day.”

Unfortunately, with all the attention, they did not finish the quilt and Zina is polishing it off at home.

The finished article will be auctioned at the summer fete at Christchurch Primary School, in Wellesley Road, Ilford.

The funds from the auction will go to its Tanzanian sister school – Kibo Primary School.

Zina has also begun teaching the skill to vulnerable women at a Help (Helping Empower Ladies Program) group at Christchurch Children’s Centre.

“It’s gone really well. They are nervous at first but crocheting helps bring them out of themselves.

“Some are making little knitted hats for their babies – it’s amazing,” she said.

Zina started knitting aged seven and took a break in her teens but she picked up the yarn again when she had her first child.

“When I was a baby, my mum knitted me a blanket and I wanted to keep up the tradition and make my baby one too,” she said.
