Paul Canal, a Bridge ward councillor, has been elected the new leader of the Redbridge Conservatives, replacing Cllr Keith Prince.
Cllr Canal was elected leader at the Tory AGM on Saturday, with Cllr Tom McClaren, a Church End councillor, elected chief whip and Cllr Colin Cronin elected group treasurer. Robert Cole, a Clayhall ward councillor, will be the deputy leader.
Cllr Canal said: “We will vigorously and constructively hold the new [Labour] administration to account and do all we can to protect this borough from untrammelled socialism that has ruined Waltham Forest and Barking and Dagenham.
He also added: “I also pay tribute to my predecessor Cllr Keith Prince, one of our longest serving leaders, who has stood down.
“He was selfless, committed and worked very hard for this borough. We owe him a debt of gratitude.”
In the statement announcing his appointment, it was revealed Cllr Joyce Ryan had been re-elected as group secretary.
“It will be a privilege to lead this group of new and experienced Conservative councillors,” said Cllr Canal.
“I am confident that in May 2018 we will restore the borough to Conservative control.”
