Feelgood rockumentary just what Dr ordered

05 February 2010
AFTER his landmark films about punk figureheads the Sex Pistols (The Filth & The Fury) and The Clash's Joe Strummer (The Future is Unwritten), Julien Temple turns his attention to Dr Feelgood.

Oil City Confidential is the last film in his trilogy on British music of the 1970s.

Oil City Confidential is the story of four men in cheap suits - Wilko Johnson, Lee Brilleaux, John B Sparks and John Martin - who crashed out of Canvey Island playing proper rhythm and blues, before the arrival of punk rock.

It features rare footage of performances and interviews with the band members.

Like many pub rock acts, Dr Feelgood were known primarily for their high energy live performances, although studio albums such as Down by the Jetty (1974) and Malpractice (1975) were popular. Their breakthrough 1976 live album, Stupidity, reached number one in the UK Albums Chart (their only chart-topper).

Their singles included Back in the Night, Roxette, Sneakin' Suspicion, She's a Wind Up, and, of course, Milk and Alcohol.

Oil City Confidential (15) is released in cinemas today (Friday).
