Table tennis legend Len is voted a hero
01 June 2006
BARCLAYS Bank awarded Len Hoffman, coach of Mossford Table Tennis Club, the prestigious Barclays Spaces for Sports Local Hero Award and a £1,000 cheque in recognition of his efforts in grassroots sport.
Len, from Ilford, was presented with his award by Petula Whatley, manager of the Barclays branch in Ilford. The award recognises his 60-year commitment to grassroots table tennis, during which time he has helped hundreds of young people all over the south east.
Brightened
David Humble, from Mossford Table Tennis Club, said: "Len's charisma, coaching skills and warm heart have brightened the lives of hundreds of people over the last 60 years. Since his retirement from the RAF in World War Two, he has lived and breathed table tennis, and deserves all the recognition that comes his way."
Petula Whatley, manager of the Barclays branch in Ilford, said: "Sometimes a story comes along that reminds you of the power and reach of community sport, just like this one.
"We are delighted to recognise Len's amazing work and contribution to grassroots sport. The Barclays Spaces for Sports Local Hero Award is all about honouring sport's true heroes, and the efforts of Len Hoffman is a fantastic example of community sport at its best."
He has been coaching at the Mossford club since 1993, and prior to that, he coached both football and table tennis in Barking and then at Newham Council.
Over the years he has nurtured some of Britan's finest young table tennis players, including Sky Andrew, now a high profile football agent.
Barclays invites fans to nominate someone in the community who deserves recognition for their outstanding contribution and Len will dedicate the £1,000 to an organisation or charity of his choice. The award forms part of Barclays Spaces for Sports, a new £30million community sponsorship, which creates sustainable sports sites across the UK in areas that lack such facilities.
