POLICE constables who tackled armed men were among officers who received commendations for bravery.
Eighteen members of Redbridge police were honoured for their work in the minutes and hours following the murder of 19-year-old Nabeer Bakurally, who was stabbed to death in Ilford Town Centre in November.
The commendations were awarded last week at the Metropolitan Police Sports and Social Club, High Road, Chigwell.
Pc John Gavin, Pc James Yates and Pc David Mukasa were commended for their professionalism and courage in arresting one of the suspects and disarming him of the knife he was carrying.
Pc Mark Jackson-Plume was commended for arresting another suspect, while Special Constable Sutharson Suresh was credited for being first on the scene.
He performed life-saving treatment on the injured teenager, and chased one of the suspects.
Pc Yates said: "With the fantastic help of Redbridge CCTV operators we were able to detain two males, one of whom was in possession of a knife.
"It is good to hear justice has been done and the two male culprits were found guilty and now face a heavy prison sentence.
"The excellent work of all those involved has helped made Redbridge a safer place."
Separately, Pc Jake Sutton was honoured for two acts of bravery.
Aman who police feared was going to set his flat on fire in Cambridge Road, Seven Kings, lunged at Pc Sutton with a kitchen knife as he burst into his home.
The officer used a baton and a shield to defend himself, before arresting the man.
In another incident, a man armed with two knives, lashed out at Pc Sutton, Pc Patrick Allen and Pc Greg Marsh.
The officers were responding to reports of a domestic assault in Woodford.
The man returned from his flat with a meat cleaver, but the officers shielded themselves behind a fire door, before arresting him.
Pc Sutton said: "It is very nice to receive recognition for the work we do as police officers, as it's not often police are recognised for their good work.
"It is my job to help make Redbridge a safer place to live and work and I will carry on doing so."
The handling of a major incident at
Woodford police station earned Pc John McGranahan and Pc Helen Begg commendations.
Aman with an airgun and a large kitchen knife walked into the station threatening to kill himself.
The officers helped to lock the building and supported successful negotiations to disarm the man.
