A TEENAGE girl has been told she could be scarred for life after she was in collision with a minibus carrying young children.

Thirteen-year-old Sophie Birdi was knocked off her feet in front of horrified classmates while walking to Loxford School of Science and Technology, Loxford Lane, Ilford.

The pupil escaped with no broken bones but suffered facial cuts and bruises and, according to her big sister Preeti, 22, was lying unconscious in a "pool of blood" while an ambulance was called.

She said: "It could have been a lot worse, but she is not too good right now.

"She hit her face and shoulder and then hit her head on the pavement. Her legs looked so bad we thought she had broken them, but luckily not.

"We have to see how her facial wounds respond to treatment but we have been warned the marks could be permanent."

Stunned classmates, who saw the accident, have been visiting Sophie at her family home in Pretoria Road, Ilford, with get-well cards and gifts.

Preeti said: "Sophie cannot remember anything about the incident and at first thought it was already the end of the summer holidays as she was a little concussed.

"Her friends are very upset about it as they watched the whole thing and saw her on the ground.

"It was a massive shock, the family was just gripped in sheer panic, all sorts of awful things were running through my mind and we could not move fast enough to get to her.

"But we are happy she is still with us and recovering."

Police were called to the scene and a spokesman said that "all necessary actions" were taken but did not confirm if they are investigating.

London Ambulance Service dispatched a paramedic and an ambulance crew, who treated Sophie at the scene before taking her to Queen's Hospital in Romford.
