'No evidence' of 11-plus cheating

JENNY COOMBES - 06 March 2010
COUNCIL chiefs have ruled there is no evidence of cheating in this year's controversial 11-plus exams as schoolchildren discover whether they got their contested places.

The Recorder discovered last month that police had been called in to probe allegations private tutors were flouting

a "security loophole" which saw pupils taking the same paper on either Saturday or Sunday exams in January.

Pupils who sat the test on the first day were asked to memorise questions, which teachers then fed to the next day's entrants, it was claimed.

A council spokesman said: "The police have concluded their investigation and are not pursuing the matter while the examination board investigation is ongoing.

"We have not had any evidence to suggest cheating took place and a review of the results indicates there is no change in the pattern of results this year compared to previous years."

Results were posted to parents on Tuesday but have not yet been officially announced by the council.

The exams are taken by youngsters applying for places at Woodford or Ilford county high schools.
