DOMINIC WIGGAN - 02 July 2009
A MAN is in hospital after he was injured while carrying out roadworks.

The accident happened at about 3.45pm on Tuesday in South Park Drive, Ilford.

A spokesman for Essex and Suffolk Water said: "A workman was injured working on a water pipe when a joint failed and he was hit by a part.

"He was taken to hospital, where we understand he is talking and in good spirits, but he is waiting for additional treatment.

"An investigation is under way into the incident."

Witness Vik Boparai was waiting in his car at the temporary traffic lights when the accident happened.

He said: "I heard a bang like a nuclear bomb, then just saw this guy swept off his feet.

"A few people stopped to see if they could help and two ladies got out of the cars and called an ambulance."

The Health and Safety Executive was believed to be visiting the site yesterday.

The work was subcontracted out to CLC Utilities by May Gurney Services, hired by Essex and Suffolk

Water.
